Canada Shifts Gears on Terrorism After Trudeau’s Exit — New PM Carney Makes Strong Statement (Source: Mark Carney (Social Media))
With the change in Canada’s political leadership, a noticeable shift is emerging in its foreign and security policy. Shortly after taking office, Prime Minister Mark Carney made a strong statement against terrorism, emphasizing a tougher stance. He affirmed that Canada’s new government stands firmly with global partners like India in the fight against terrorism.
Mark Carney described the Air India 'Kanishka' plane bomb blast in 1985 as the most horrific terrorist attack in the history of the country and expressed deep sorrow over this tragedy. He said that 329 innocent people, including 268 Canadian citizens, were killed in this attack 40 years ago, which the country can never forget. This statement of the Canadian PM has come at a time when tribute programmes are being organised in Canada on the 40th anniversary of the 'Kanishka' plane bomb blast.
On 23 June 1985, Air India Flight 182 'Kanishka', going from Montreal to Delhi via London, had a terrible explosion near the coast of Ireland. This explosion happened just 45 minutes before the plane reached Heathrow Airport in London. Due to the explosion, all 329 people on board the plane were killed; most of them were Canadian citizens of Indian origin.
India's Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar also shared a post on the social media platform X and recalled this horrific attack. He wrote that the Air India 182 bomb blast is one of the most gruesome incidents of terrorism, and it reminds the whole world that there should be no leniency towards terrorism.
At present, the kind of statement given by Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney against terrorism is being seen as a positive sign. Meanwhile, the question is whether the change in Canada's stance will become the basis for a decisive step against Khalistani activities.
